How to estimate an elevator cab project

An estimate that survives engineering.

A defensible cab estimate connects scope to quantities, quantities to cost, and operations to station hours. It also states what is unknown. The goal is not false precision. The goal is a quote that can be audited when drawings change.

Build the estimate in a fixed order

  1. STEP 1

    Define the scope baseline

    Name the project, cars, drawing revision, specification sections, survey status, inclusions, exclusions, alternates, and quoted schedule basis.

  2. STEP 2

    Complete the component takeoff

    Measure and count every cab component. Record unit, quantity, material specification, finish, yield assumption, source, and supporting drawing location.

    Apply material pricing

    Use an approved rate library only where it fits. Attach current vendor quotes for project-specific or uncertain items, including freight and quote validity.

  4. STEP 4

    Estimate labour by station

    Assign hours to the operations that will perform the work. Use your shop's approved hourly rate and identify overtime or premium conditions separately.

  5. STEP 5

    Add logistics and field cost

    Price packaging, inbound freight, delivery, unloading, storage, travel, access restrictions, installation, supervision, and likely return work.

  6. STEP 6

    Review risk and issue the quote

    Check quantities, commercial terms, lead times, assumptions, contingency, and margin under your company's approval rules before release.

Material takeoff by cab component

Organize the BOM the way the cab will be detailed, bought, fabricated, assembled, and checked. Categories vary by design, but this structure exposes omissions.

Estimate labour hours by station

Do not hide labour in one blended number. Break it into engineering and detailing, programming or layout, cutting, forming, welding, grinding, finishing, panel assembly, ceiling or lighting assembly, quality inspection, packing, delivery, and installation. Use the stations that match your shop.

For each station, record planned hours, crew assumptions, setup time, repeated-unit learning where your approved method permits it, and your shop's approved hourly rate. Vendor quote versus catalogue pricing

Catalogue or rate-library pricing fits repeatable standard items when the source, effective date, unit, and purchasing conditions are controlled. Vendor quotes belong on custom fabrication, specialty finishes, glass, stone, unique hardware, outsourced processes, and any item with uncertain delivered cost or lead time.

Store the quote with the estimate. Capture expiration, minimum order, tooling, setup, freight, taxes where applicable, exclusions, submittal requirements, and lead time. If the quote expires before likely release, state the exposure. Never replace a missing quote with unexplained contingency.

Freight, site access, and contingency

Freight is more than one carrier line. Include inbound supplier freight, dedicated or consolidated shop-to-site delivery, fuel or access charges where quoted, crating, unloading, hoisting, storage, redelivery, and protection. Confirm dock size, street restrictions, delivery windows, floor path, service-elevator availability, security, and work-hour rules.

Contingency belongs against named uncertainty. Incomplete survey dimensions, unsettled finishes, volatile supply, compressed review periods, or difficult access may justify an allowance under your shop's policy. Identify what it covers. Keep exclusions explicit. Do not invent a universal percentage.

The re-price trigger after engineering

Freeze the quoted baseline: scope, revision, BOM, station hours, vendor support, logistics, assumptions, and price. When survey findings or drawing comments change material, quantity, finish, geometry, labour, freight, access, or schedule, compare the revised condition line by line.
